VINTAGE Carved Wood Dragon Keepsake Box 1930s 1940s Small Chest with Brass Lock Family Heirloom

This box came from Aunt Nen’s, and it has a family history that is considerably more practical than its carved dragons might suggest. Momma kept it in her bedroom for years, filled with packaged hosiery—back when a lady would never leave the house with bare legs! A couple of times a year, when Hanes went on sale, she would stock it right back up.

Now it’s ready to hold someone else’s treasures, although there’s certainly nothing wrong with continuing the hosiery tradition.

We place it circa the 1930s–1940s based on family history. Momma always said it was sandalwood. That is the traditional family identification, rather than a verified wood-species determination; it retains a slight sweet scent.

The warm-toned wooden chest has carved dragon decoration on the front and lid, incised designs on the sides and back, dovetailed corners, and an unlined wooden interior.

Condition: This is a well-used family piece with scratches, scuffs, finish wear, small chips, and visible splits and gaps at some joints. Despite those signs of age, the box is very stable and solid. I replaced the broken lid support with the new one shown in the photographs. The brass hardware shows age-related darkening and wear. Please examine the close-ups for details.

About that lock: the key disappeared long ago, but I’ve found that a lobster fork will persuade it to open. So, in true Auntie Nen fashion, I’m including one in the package. Consider it an unconventional accessory, rather than a promise of secure storage.
