Before you turned a knob and heard that reassuring click, you reached for a match! This charming Japanese ceramic wall match holder kept a kitchen necessity close at hand, dressed up with colorful birds and flowers in a pattern reminiscent of an embroidered sampler.
Many a kitchen stove needed a match when this little holder was new—before pilot lights became commonplace, and long before electronic ignition. Keeping matches handy was everyday kitchen business!
