These two quiet readers have been part of my family for years. They were carved by my Uncle Dutchie, Brother August Hetzel, a Christian Brother whose woodworking is part of our family story.
Each figure sits with head bowed over an open book. Simple, expressive carving gives shape to their clothing, hands, and seats, while visible tool marks let you see something of the hands that made them.
The pair was featured in “In the Artist’s Hands” in the fall wood issue of my magazine, Distinctive Living, alongside the turned wooden boxes made by my Uncle George.
Approximately 8" tall each. This listing includes both bookends. The wood species and exact date of creation are unknown.
The wood has a warm brown finish with visible surface wear, small marks, and lighter areas along some edges. Please examine the photographs for the carving details and condition. Each figure has a chip along the front edge of its hood, exposing lighter wood; one chip is larger than the other. Both are shown in the close-up photographs. The brown finish also shows surface wear, small marks, and lighter areas along some edges.
A lovely pair to stand among favorite books—two readers keeping company with the stories on your shelf.
