This little box has been part of my family for decades. My Uncle George made it from hardwood he collected during his time in South America in the 1930s and 1940s. I believe he made these boxes in the 1950s or 1960s, turning them on a lathe and polishing the wood to a beautiful shine.
Originally intended to hold cigarettes, it is ready to become a small jewelry box, a keeper for trinkets, or a little cache for a prized possession.
This one has a softly rounded lid, a gently tapered body, and a shaped foot. Rich reddish-brown wood and broad, darker swirls give it warmth and character. The wood species is unknown.
Approximately 5" tall with the lid. This listing is for the single rounded-lid box shown.
I have cleaned it, refreshed the wax finish, and replaced the deteriorated felt underneath with a new cork pad. Light surface scratches and a few small pale marks remain visible, preserving the character of a piece that has spent decades in our family.
I would love to see Uncle George’s work find a new home, with something treasured tucked inside.
