This little box has been part of my family for decades. My Uncle George made it from hardwood he collected during his time in South America in the 1930s and 1940s. I believe he turned these boxes in the 1950s or 1960s, shaping them on a lathe and polishing the wood to a beautiful shine.
Originally intended to hold cigarettes, it is ready for a new purpose: jewelry, small keepsakes, or a private little cache for a prized possession.
This one has a wonderfully sculptural stepped lid, a gently tapered body, and warm brown grain filled with swirls and darker markings. The wood species is unknown, but its character speaks for itself.
Approximately 6" tall with the lid and 3½" in diameter. This listing is for the single stepped-lid box shown.
I have cleaned it, refreshed the wax finish, and replaced the deteriorated felt underneath with a new cork pad. Small surface marks and fine lines in the wood remain visible, along with the natural variations that make this individual piece its own.
After all these years with me, I would love to see Uncle George’s work become part of someone else’s home—a beautiful little place to keep something that matters.
