Five genuine Mercury dimes – and every one of them was minted while the United States was fighting World War II.
This lot includes:
• 1 × 1942-D – Denver Mint
• 2 × 1944-D – Denver Mint
• 1 × 1944-S – San Francisco Mint
• 1 × 1945-S – San Francisco Mint
All five are circulated Mercury dimes struck in the traditional 90% silver alloy used for American dimes of the period.
The Mercury dime – officially the Winged Liberty Head dime – was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and minted from 1916 through 1945. Liberty appears on the obverse wearing a winged cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. The reverse features a fasces and olive branch, representing strength and peace.
But the dates make this particular group especially evocative.
Every one of these dimes entered the American monetary system during World War II.
When the earliest was struck in Denver in 1942, Pearl Harbor was still a recent memory. American factories were converting to wartime production, rationing was becoming part of everyday life, and millions of Americans were entering military service.
By 1944, Allied troops were fighting their way across Europe and the Pacific. At home, Americans bought war bonds, planted victory gardens, saved ration points and worked factory shifts to supply a war being fought thousands of miles away.
And then there are the two 1945 dimes from San Francisco – struck during the final year of the war.
These weren't commemorative coins made decades later to remember that history.
They were the money people were actually using while it happened.
One of these dimes could have bought a newspaper carrying war headlines. Another might have crossed the counter of a drugstore, diner or movie theater. They could have gone into a collection for a war bond, bought a cup of coffee, or jingled in the pocket of someone headed to a USO dance.
Could have.
We'll never know where these particular five traveled or what they purchased.
But they certainly show evidence of having lived useful lives. They have honest circulation wear, toning, discoloration, marks and loss of detail accumulated over approximately eight decades.
And somehow, after surviving the war years and generations of American life afterward, all five are still here together.
