A group of eight vintage Mercury dimes from 1926 through 1928, including a 1928-D from the Denver Mint — eight pieces of American silver from the final full years before the Great Depression changed everything.

Included in this lot:

• 1926 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark — 4 coins
• 1927 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark — 1 coin
• 1928 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark — 2 coins
• 1928-D — Denver Mint — 1 coin

Officially known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, the Mercury dime was designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman and struck from 1916 through 1945. Each coin was made of 90% silver and 10% copper.

The 1928-D is the less common issue in this group, with an original Denver mintage of approximately 4.16 million coins. Its “D” mintmark remains visible on the reverse. The remaining seven coins show no mintmark, identifying them as Philadelphia issues.

These are circulated, ungraded coins showing substantial honest wear from use. Details vary from coin to coin, with softened design elements, scratches, marks, toning and discoloration consistent with their age and long circulation. They have not been cleaned or polished by Auntie Nen’s Stuff.

Each Mercury dime was originally:
• 90% silver, 10% copper
• 2.50 grams
• Approximately 17.9 mm in diameter
• Designed by Adolph A. Weinman

A DIME IN ITS TIME

These dimes entered circulation near the height of the Roaring Twenties, when the American economy seemed unstoppable.

Calvin Coolidge was President. Radios were finding their way into American homes, automobiles crowded newly improved roads, movie palaces were packed, jazz was everywhere, and prosperity seemed to be the new normal.

The newest coin in this group was struck in 1928.

Then came 1929.

We can't know how long these particular coins remained in circulation or whose pockets they passed through. But as banks failed, businesses closed and unemployment climbed during the years that followed, ten cents became considerably more important than it might have seemed during the prosperity of 1926.

One of these may have been among the last few dimes someone had to their name.

Perhaps it bought a cup of coffee or something to eat. Perhaps it was carefully saved rather than spent. Perhaps it passed from one person who desperately needed it to another who needed it just as badly.

We can't know.

But more than a century of honest wear tells us these coins weren't sitting safely in collectors' albums while America changed around them.

They were out there in it.

Sold together as the group of eight shown. Please examine all photographs carefully; they are an important part of the description and show the exact coins you will receive.
