A group of four vintage Mercury Dimes spanning the 1920s and 1930s, including a 1920-S struck at the San Francisco Mint.

Officially known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, the Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and struck from 1916 through 1945. Its distinctive portrait of Liberty in a winged cap quickly acquired the “Mercury” nickname that collectors still use today.

This group includes:

1920-S — San Francisco Mint
1929 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark
1936 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark
1937 — Philadelphia Mint, no mintmark

All four coins show circulation wear consistent with their age, with the 1920-S showing the greatest wear. On that coin, wear at the rim affects the final digit of the date, although the surviving portion remains identifiable as a 0. Its “S” mintmark is visible on the reverse.

The other three coins retain varying degrees of detail in Liberty’s portrait and the fasces, olive branch, lettering and other reverse elements. Surface coloration, marks and wear vary from coin to coin and are shown closely in the photographs.

These coins have not been professionally graded, and we make no representation of numerical or adjectival grades. Please review the photographs carefully for your own assessment of condition.

You will receive the exact four coins shown in the photographs.

A DIME IN ITS TIME
The four coins in this group span an extraordinary 17 years of American life. When the 1920-S was struck, Woodrow Wilson was president, Prohibition had just begun, and American women would vote in a presidential election nationwide for the first time that November. By the time the 1929 dime entered the world, Herbert Hoover was president and the country was approaching the stock-market crash that would usher in the Great Depression. The 1936 and 1937 coins belong to Franklin Roosevelt's America and the New Deal era.

And a dime meant considerably more then than it does today. In 1920, ten cents could buy everyday necessities and small pleasures—a newspaper, a couple packages of chewing gum, or nearly a pound of bread in some cities. These weren't coins made to sit in protective cases. They passed across counters, went into pockets and purses, and came back out again.

The wear visible on these coins is part of that story. We can't know where they've been or what they purchased, but each one is a small surviving piece of everyday American life from nearly a century ago.
