VINTAGE Handcrafted Butterfly Wing Art Pendant - Double-Sided Peacock & Egret Miniature - Signed

An extraordinary double-sided miniature work of natural history art designed to be worn as a pendant.

Beneath crystal-clear domed lenses are two completely different bird portraits: a magnificent peacock displaying its brilliant plumage on one side and a graceful white egret in flight on the other. Each scene is individually signed by the artist, although the signature has thus far resisted definitive identification.

Butterfly wings are well documented as the traditional medium for this form of miniature art, and the iridescent backgrounds exhibit the unmistakable shimmer associated with butterfly wing. During my examination of this pendant under high magnification, however, I noticed something unexpected. Portions of the birds themselves—particularly the egret's plumage—appear to be composed of incredibly fine feather fibers rather than paint alone.

That observation immediately brought back something my mother told me as a child: that the birds were made with hummingbird feathers. While I cannot present that as documented fact, the microscopic images included in this listing seem remarkably consistent with her recollection. I have intentionally included those photographs so you can examine the construction yourself and draw your own conclusions.

What is beyond question is the extraordinary craftsmanship. The peacock's facial markings, crest, eye placement, beak, and proportions are rendered with remarkable anatomical accuracy despite the bird itself measuring only a fraction of an inch. The reverse is equally impressive, with the white egret captured in a natural, elegant flight posture that rewards close inspection.

The pendant retains its frame and clear domed lenses, allowing both miniature artworks to be appreciated equally. It is offered as a pendant only; no chain is included, allowing the next owner to display or wear it as they choose.
