This fascinating note reflects the importance of transportation and commerce in Republican-era China. One side features a detailed railroad scene winding through the countryside, while the reverse depicts an ocean-going steamship, two powerful symbols of modern industry, trade, and national development.

During the early twentieth century, railroads and shipping networks represented progress, economic growth, and connection to the wider world. Chinese currency of the period often celebrated these achievements, and this note serves as a remarkable reminder of an era when modern transportation was viewed as a source of national pride.

This note comes from a group of Chinese currency brought home by my father, who served as a U.S. Army payroll sergeant in Shanghai during World War II. Preserved for decades, these notes provide a tangible connection to a transformative period in modern Chinese history.
