📜 Historic Chinese Currency from the Republican Era
Issued by the Central Bank of China in 1936, this 100 Yuan note features a portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, widely regarded as the founder of modern China, on the front and an elegant architectural scene on the reverse.
This note comes from a group of Chinese banknotes brought home from Shanghai by my father following World War II. He served as a U.S. Army payroll sergeant in China during the war. As inflation and currency devaluation accelerated, large quantities of paper currency lost much of their spending power. Years later, many of these notes survived as family keepsakes and historical artifacts.
Printed by the renowned London security printer Waterlow & Sons, the note displays exceptional engraving detail, intricate borders, and beautiful period typography characteristic of pre-war banknote design.
The note has been mounted in a clear acrylic display frame that allows both sides to be viewed and enjoyed.
Condition:
• Genuine 1936 Central Bank of China note
• Portrait of Sun Yat-sen
• Attractive architectural vignette on reverse
• Original circulation wear, folds, and age toning present
• Evidence of historic mounting/tape visible near margins
• Displayed in clear acrylic frame
• Please review photographs carefully for condition
A fascinating artifact from a period that witnessed the Japanese invasion of China, World War II, hyperinflation, and the eventual end of Republican rule on the mainland.
An excellent piece for collectors of Chinese currency, Asian history, World War II memorabilia, or historical paper ephemera.
