β¨ Historic Chinese Currency Presented for Display
Part of my Shanghai Collection Series, this authentic 1936 New Fu-Tien Bank 100 Dollar banknote is presented in a clear magnetic acrylic display holder that allows both sides of the note to be viewed and enjoyed.
Unlike many Chinese notes of the period that focused on national leaders or architecture, this example features a striking symbolic design of a peacock and horse standing atop overlapping globes, creating one of the most distinctive and visually memorable pieces in the collection.
π A Family Story From Shanghai
This note comes from a group brought home from Shanghai by my father during his military service. During the years surrounding World War II, inflation, political upheaval, and currency reforms led to many earlier banknotes being withdrawn from circulation.
According to family tradition, my father asked what should be done with the obsolete notes. His commanding officer reportedly replied:
"I don't care if you decorate your Christmas tree with them."
So they did.
Many notes from this group retained traces of tape from those holiday decorations decades later. This example preserves a tangible connection to both family history and a remarkable chapter of twentieth-century history.
π¦ Unique Symbolic Artwork
The front of the note features an unusual design showing a peacock and horse standing atop overlapping globes, surrounded by intricate security engraving and decorative borders.
The reverse is dominated by bold red engraving and ornate geometric patterns that showcase the craftsmanship of early twentieth-century banknote production.
π International Printing Heritage
This note was produced during an era when specialized security printers created some of the world's most sophisticated engraved currency. The intricate line work, elaborate patterns, and artistic design elements demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship that made banknotes of this period miniature works of art.
