✨ Historic Chinese Currency Presented for Display
Part of my Shanghai Collection Series, this authentic 1941 Central Bank of China 50 Yuan banknote is presented in a clear magnetic acrylic display holder that allows both sides of the note to be viewed and enjoyed.
Featuring an engraved portrait of Sun Yat-sen on the front and a striking red architectural temple scene on the reverse, this note showcases the artistry and craftsmanship that made early twentieth-century banknotes miniature works of art.
πŸ“œ A Family Story From Shanghai
This note comes from a group brought home from Shanghai by my father during his military service. During the years surrounding World War II, political upheaval, inflation, and currency reforms led to many earlier Chinese banknotes being withdrawn from circulation.
According to family tradition, my father asked what should be done with the obsolete notes. His commanding officer reportedly replied:
"I don't care if you decorate your Christmas tree with them."
So they did.
Many notes from this group retained traces of tape from those holiday decorations decades later. This example preserves a tangible connection to that unique family story and a remarkable period in world history.
πŸ› Architectural Artwork
The reverse features an elegant temple rendered in rich red engraving. Combined with the intricate borders, security patterns, and detailed printing techniques, the note serves as both a historical artifact and a decorative display piece.
🌍 International Provenance
Many Chinese banknotes of this era were produced using advanced security printing techniques developed by some of the world's leading banknote printers. Their intricate engraving, watermark areas, and anti-counterfeiting features remain impressive examples of early twentieth-century printing craftsmanship.
