✨ Vintage Corning Pyroceram 10" Skillet with Lid — First Generation CorningWare

This remarkable early CorningWare skillet dates to the very beginning of Corning’s revolutionary Pyroceram cookware line, introduced in the late 1950s. Pieces like this represent the earliest era of CorningWare production, when Corning was introducing American kitchens to a completely new material: a glass-ceramic that could withstand extreme temperature changes.
The bottom carries the earliest embossed mark:
CORNING
PYROCERAM T.M.
MADE IN U.S.A.

Unlike later CorningWare pieces, this skillet includes its original Pyroceram lid, made from the same glass-ceramic material as the dish itself. Within just a few years Corning switched to clear Pyrex lids, making these early solid lids a distinctive feature of first-generation pieces.
The form was originally marketed as a 10-inch skillet, reflecting Corning’s early vision that Pyroceram cookware could move seamlessly from stovetop to oven to table. Today, many cooks enjoy using this versatile piece as a covered casserole, gratin dish, or buffet server.
The iconic Cornflower pattern — now one of the most beloved designs in American cookware history — appears here in its earliest form.
A wonderful example of the moment when aerospace technology quietly found its way into everyday American kitchens.

💬 Auntie Nen’s Note
When Corning introduced Pyroceram cookware in the late 1950s, it was a true kitchen revolution. The material had originally been developed for aerospace and industrial uses because it could survive extreme heat and temperature shock.
Corning quickly realized something remarkable: if it could survive that kind of heat, it could certainly survive your oven.

Pieces like this early Pyroceram skillet represent the very beginning of CorningWare in American kitchens. I recently featured one of these early examples on my YouTube channel while discussing the origins of CorningWare and the early Pyroceram era.
