$100.00
An 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with substantial surviving design detail and overall aged, mottled surfaces.
At 140 years old, this substantial silver dollar is a classic piece of 19th-century American coinage. Philadelphia struck 19,963,000 Morgan Dollars in 1886. As was customary for Philadelphia issues of this period, this coin carries no mintmark.
What stands out on this particular coin is the amount of design detail that remains beneath its considerable surface discoloration.
On the obverse, Liberty’s eye, ear, lips and facial profile remain well defined. LIBERTY is fully legible across the coronet, and there is extensive detail remaining in the individual curls and strands of hair, as well as the cotton and wheat ornamentation. The date, stars and surrounding lettering remain distinct.
The reverse also retains considerable detail. Individual feathers remain visible across the eagle’s wings and body, with the head and beak clearly defined. The arrows, olive branch and surrounding wreath remain readily distinguishable, including individual leaf details. The rim and edge reeding are also well defined.
The surfaces show substantial mottled gray and brown discoloration on both sides, becoming particularly dark around portions of the perimeter. We have made no attempt to clean or polish the coin. Its coloration and other surface characteristics are shown closely in the photographs and microscope video.
This coin has not been professionally graded, and we make no representation of a numerical or adjectival grade. Instead, we have described the visible details and documented the coin closely so that collectors can make their own assessment of its condition.
