VINTAGE 1886-O Morgan Silver Dollar New Orleans Mint 90% Silver US Coin

An 1886-O Morgan Silver Dollar from the New Orleans Mint, with remarkably strong surviving design detail despite its dark, aged surfaces.

Struck 140 years ago, this substantial silver dollar comes from an era when the New Orleans Mint was once again producing U.S. coinage after reopening in 1879. The small “O” mintmark beneath the eagle identifies its New Orleans origin, while George T. Morgan’s familiar Liberty and eagle designs make it one of the most recognizable American coins of the 19th century.

What makes this particular coin interesting is the amount of detail that remains.

On the obverse, Liberty’s eye, lips and facial profile remain well defined. LIBERTY is fully legible across the coronet, individual curls and strands of hair remain visible, and the date, stars and surrounding lettering are distinct.

The reverse likewise retains considerable detail. The eagle’s eye and beak are clearly defined, individual feather details remain visible, and the arrows and olive branch can be readily distinguished. The surrounding wreath retains its leaf detail, and the edge reeding remains intact and well defined.

The surfaces show dark discoloration and spotting consistent with the coin’s long history, most noticeably a dark area across the eagle’s breast. The coin has not been cleaned or polished by us, and its surfaces are shown closely in the photographs.
