This note comes from a group brought home from Shanghai by my father during his military service. During the war years and the economic turmoil that followed, Chinese currency experienced severe devaluation and was eventually replaced by later issues. According to family tradition, my father asked his commanding officer what should be done with the obsolete notes. The response was memorable:
"I don't care if you decorate your Christmas tree with them."
So they did.
Many notes from this group still showed traces of tape from those holiday decorations decades later. This example retains evidence of that history, connecting it directly to a unique family story from wartime China.
