🐟 This beautiful bakelite and silver-plate fish set was probably never used, and was most likely a wedding gift to Aunt Nen upon her marriage to Uncle George in 1927. If I were to guess, I think it might have come from Nen's sister Aunt Clara and her husband Uncle Shorty, as they were living in Bermuda at the time. The blades are silver-plate, stamped with the letters “EPNS” (Electro Plated Nickel Silver). The handles are warm-toned bakelite, with striations baked in to mimic the look of bone or ivory. The entire set rests in a fitted wooden box — likely oak or walnut — with a blank brass engraveable plate on top and a keyhole lock stamped British Made.
🔑 Alas, the key is long gone!

📜 Fish sets like this were once a staple in well-appointed households from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century. Designed for serving and eating fish courses at formal dinners, the wide, blunt blades made it easier to lift delicate portions from the bone without tearing them, while the matching forks helped support and serve each bite. Owning a complete fish set — particularly one with modern bakelite handles — was a sign of refinement and social standing, especially in the interwar years when dining etiquette was a marker of good breeding.

✨ Whether you see it as a glimpse into the world of formal entertaining or as a charming relic of Art Deco-era design, this set offers both beauty and history. It would make a striking display piece in a vintage kitchen, an elegant addition to a formal dining table, or a thoughtful gift for someone who appreciates the finer details of the past.
