This note comes from a group of Chinese banknotes brought home from Shanghai during World War II by my father, who served as a U.S. Army payroll sergeant.
As family lore tells it, when wartime inflation rendered many of these notes nearly worthless, soldiers were told they could "decorate their Christmas trees with them." Fortunately, many survived, preserving a unique chapter of both Chinese and American history.
